There are moments when you miss your old Polaroid. Photography’s move into the digital era led to advancements we could've only dreamed of years ago, like instant feedback via an LCD screen. But, there is still nothing like holding a fresh print in your hand. Here to solve this problem are portable printers. They can be stuffed into a bag, fit snugly in a corner, and they produce quality images you can touch and feel.
Mobile printing is bringing back the snapshot, or the 4 x 6-inch print we used to get back from our local one-hour photo labs. Now, we can have a "lab in our pocket" and instantly pop in our SD cards or connect with Wi-Fi to receive our images.
For example, the HiTi P110S PocketStudio Photo Printer Kit is a dye-sublimation printer that weighs only 4.85 pounds. This is easily transportable for a trip or expedition. It can even use a rechargeable battery so that you don't have to worry about finding an electrical outlet. This is only possible due to the process of storing 3 colors of ink on ribbons, which eliminates the need for large printer systems and liquid-ink cartridges.
The P110S is a great portable solution and can print up to 60 4 x 6" images on a single charge. Additionally, built-in memory card slots mean you can skip the computer step and print directly from the cards using the 2.5" LCD screen. However, it is far from the smallest option in this category.

Moving away from the super-compact printers, we have a couple of options for those who want a bit more quality in their prints: the inkjet printers. They use a series of ink cartridges to apply tiny dots of ink droplets to the paper, which allows for a much higher resolution than that created by the dye-sublimation process. However, the need for separate cartridges and a liquid-ink design means they will have to be a bit larger than the printers previously mentioned in this article.
A great example of this is the Epson PM225 PictureMate Charm Compact Photo Inkjet Printer. It weighs only 7.9 pounds but can make 4 x 6-inch prints with a resolution of 5760 x 1440 dpi. It remains mobile with the capability to accept a battery and can use Bluetooth with an optional adapter for creating a full wireless solution.
Another benefit of this printer is access to more advanced print settings, such as layout and templates, via the LCD screen. This means that you can print out proof sheets or just fun photo series on a single sheet of paper.
So far, we have only dealt with printers capable of creating images up to 4 x 6". This generally helps portable devices by keeping the printer's size small. However, some people find this to be a major limitation and just want one printer to deliver both photographs and documents.
Keeping with the compact theme is the Canon PIXMA iP100 Compact Color Inkjet Photo Printer. It can print borderless 8.5 x 11-inch pages at 9600 x 2400 dpi. A huge advantage over other compact devices is its ability to take a wide variety of media types, including transparencies, stickers, and envelopes, among others. If you constantly need to print graphs, maps, or colored charts, this is an excellent option.
If you were looking for wireless or direct printing, it is still capable via an IrDA interface or an optional Bluetooth interface. Other accessories include a rechargeable battery and car charger, perfect for those who are always on the go.
One final option is also the largest in this series; however, the HP OfficeJet 150 Mobile Color All-in-One Inkjet Printer gives users scanning as well as excellent document printing. Producing inkjet prints at 4800 dpi and scans at 600 dpi, this printer is an excellent choice for those running a mobile business.
The OfficeJet 150 can handle letter-sized documents and print borderless images up to 4 x 6". Combined with a long-lasting rechargeable battery, it can make up to 500 prints on a single charge and even has Bluetooth connectivity.
These devices bring the tactility of the printed image to those who otherwise may not stop moving long enough to enjoy them. And, in some cases, these printers can deliver prints faster than your Dad's "instant" film ever could.

Compact cameras, often referred to as point-and-shoots, are the most prevalent type of digital camera available, with an expansive list of options available in regard to form factor, imaging capabilities, manual versus automated functions, and a host of technologies that work to facilitate, as their name implies, truly point-and-shoot imaging possibilities. The point-and-shoot is a versatile type of camera by design and is well-matched to photographers of all levels; from a true hobbyist’s sole camera, used for photographing family moments, to a casual enthusiast wanting greater imaging capabilities than his or her smartphone, to the professional looking for an apt, more compact companion to a DSLR or mirrorless camera.
Point-and-shoot cameras encompass a few distinct styles, each of which offers certain benefits, depending on one’s intended usage. A minuscule, pocketable camera is the ultimate everyday companion due to its small profile; a bridge-style camera links some of the benefits of interchangeable-lens cameras along with the intuitivene operation of a point-and-shoot; rugged cameras provide highly durable body construction that can endure use in some of the harshest climates; Wi-Fi enabled cameras provide the greatest amount of ease in quickly showcasing photography online; and large-sensor compact cameras are capable of creating imagery with similar quality to that of a DSLR, including manual control options, in a package that is a fraction of the size of larger imaging devices. With so much room and technology available in the current imaging sphere, many of these capabilities are further blended together to provide an even more efficient method for meeting several requirements of a camera in a single device.

Different Types of Point-and-Shoots

Pocket-Sized Compact Cameras

The most common and easily associable type of point-and-shoot is the pocket-sized variant. This style of camera most often meets many photographers' requirements, and does so in a consistently smaller and smaller package. The main asset of these cameras, aside from their slender design, is that they tend to be the most affordable cameras available and possess a wealth of imaging features that have continued to grow at a steady rate over time.
The main competition for these small cameras currently is the huge influx of smartphones and the simple fact that most people seem to be in possession of a camera at any given moment. As smartphones' imaging capabilities continue to grow, dedicated point-and-shoot cameras' imaging prowess, quality, and functionality have also expanded to provide an even richer means for day-to-day photographing. When compared to a smartphone, a point-and-shoot camera typically differentiates itself in several ways to serve as a complementary device to a smartphone, rather than just another device to have to carry.
Beginning with sensor size, a dedicated point-and-shoot of any size will usually have a larger sensor than any smartphone. This alone makes these pocketable compacts capable of producing smoother-looking imagery with substantially better low-light quality and sensitivity. Even if the resolution, in megapixels, of a camera phone and a point-and-shoot are the same, the point-and-shoot's larger sensor means that each individual pixel is also larger. This allows for better reception of light when taking photos or videos, which subsequently leads to higher image quality in all lighting conditions.
The second main benefit of a dedicated camera is the inclusion of an optical zoom lens, versus a smartphone’s fixed focal length lens and implementation of digital zoom in order to change the apparent field of view. An optical zoom lens will maintain its optical clarity throughout the range, with the ability to deliver sharp, high-resolution photos at wide-angle to telephoto perspectives. A camera that only employs digital zoom as a means for altering the magnification will always be subject to detrimental image quality, since it is relying on interpolating information digitally in order to present a full-resolution image.
Third, some other points to consider in a point-and-shoot’s edge over a camera phone include the common capability of recording RAW imagery for more refined post-production control, the inclusion of some physical controls to allow for a more intuitive means of interacting with the camera, and the incorporation of a significantly richer set of imaging functions for more in-camera control over how recorded images look.
While pocket-sized cameras seem like a well-defined realm within the larger point-and-shoot context, there is still a range of options available in these tiny cameras. Cameras such as the Canon PowerShot ELPH series feature some of smallest designs available, while still delivering the ability to record full HD 1080p video and, additionally, some even feature touchscreen LCD monitors and wireless connectivity to further enhance their ease of use. Among some of the most uniquely designed point-and-shoots is the PowerShot N, which has a tilting LCD touchscreen monitor to support working from both high and low angles with less hassle, and is also geared for instant wireless sharing of imagery directly from the camera.
Upping the functionality a bit more, and maintaining a discreet size, is the Sony Cyber-shot HX50V, which integrates an expansive 30x optical zoom lens into its design as well as built-in Wi-Fi, GPS, a pop-up flash, and a Multi Interface shoe for attaching external flashes or triggers. These added incentives do add some bulk to the camera but also extend its usefulness well past its simply being a snapshot-only point-and-shoot.

Advanced Compact Cameras

Slightly larger than the pocket-sized point-and-shoots, a new breed of point-and-shoots has recently emerged that combines even larger sensor sizes with additional manual and physical controls as well as faster, brighter lenses and extended functionality by way of viewfinders, accessory shoes, and other control capabilities more often seen on DSLR cameras. These advanced compact cameras are perfectly suitable as a professional photographer’s everyday, walk-around camera, an enthusiast's travel camera, or simply a perfect tool for anyone wishing to hone their craft a bit more than a fully automated point-and-shoot will allow. As previously mentioned in regard to sensor size, these cameras have even larger sensor sizes than traditional point-and-shoots, ranging from the recently popularized 1-inch sensor all the way up to APS-C and full-frame sensors that were previously only available in DSLRs. It is advisable to first narrow the initial selection by the most important feature of a camera, based on the organized types. Look at some of the other main features of each camera: would it be nice to have a tilting LCD monitor? Or would the versatility in using AA batteries as a power source be more valuable when traveling? Do I need wireless connectivity or am I planning on just uploading and printing my photographs from my computer at home? Isolating the main goals and creating a hierarchy are central to the idea of selecting a point-and-shoot, since it is one of the most broadly organized genres of digital cameras available today. Sharp, clear, well-lit, and attractive images of the items you offer for sale online are the most crucial elements of successful online sales at sites such as eBay. High-quality images with excellent detail, accurate color balance, and plain, evenly lit backgrounds are much more likely to result in swift sales and may even help you acquire higher prices. Professional-quality shots of your products also help motivate buyers because they convey the subliminal message that you’re competent, knowledgeable, and trustworthy. Also, since these images officially count as part of the product description, it’s essential to display accurately and clearly any blemishes, age marks, or patina that would affect the value of the items you’re selling. Camera

Lens

Backgrounds

A plain, smooth white background without creases or lines is most effective for showcasing what you’re selling, and for focusing the viewer’s attention on the object. For relatively flat objects like coins, stamps, and watches, you can simply place them on a sheet of white matte board and photograph them from above or make an impromptu “sweep” background by clamping white paper to a support, letting it fall in a smooth arc, and taping the bottom edge to a table or other flat surface. Avoid right angles, which create a distracting horizon line.

Lighting Tents and Shooting Tables

If you’re selling multiple items, or plan extensive online sales, it’s far more efficient to acquire a lighting tent or shooting table with a background sweep to provide a seamless white background and facilitate soft, even, shadow-free lighting for any items you’re selling. Lighting tents come in various sizes and configurations, but most have diffusion material on the sides, bottom, and top, with a front opening for placing and photographing the object.
Light tents can be used outdoors or placed next to a window, with daylight providing the illumination, or used with diffused light sources such as 5000K daylight fluorescent lights or floodlights aimed at the sides and top. You can even use a ring flash mounted directly on the lens. Lighting tents are also available as kits that include lights, and some have provision for inserting different-colored backgrounds, such as gray or blue. A sweep is basically a translucent Plexiglas sheet with a curved surface that transitions from vertical to horizontal and forms an extended tongue at the front. It can be lit from the top, sides, or underneath to provide a smooth, even-toned background. One example of a sweep would be the Impact Desktop Studio Table.
Both tents and sweeps are quick to set up and can be easily stored in set-up position for instant use.

Lighting

In a pinch, window light and overcast daylight can provide relatively soft, shadowless lighting, and any minor shadows can be controlled with simple matte-board reflectors held in place with clamps or tape. If the lighting is too cool (bluish), set your camera’s Auto White Balance (AWB) control to “overcast” or a warmer color-temperature setting for a more natural look. Daylight-balanced fluorescent lights with diffusers, tungsten-balanced floodlights with umbrellas, and daylight-balanced ring flash units are all excellent sources of illumination when used alone or in conjunction with tents and sweeps, but make sure your camera’s AWB control is properly set. For a fluorescent light with diffuser you might try the Lowel Ego Digital Imaging Fluorescent Light. Tripods

While it’s possible to shoot adequate online product shots handheld at sensitivity settings up to ISO 1600, it’s best to shoot at small apertures in the f/11 to f/32 range to maximize depth of field and enhance overall image sharpness and detail. Since this often entails shooting at relatively slow shutter speeds, it’s better to use a tripod to achieve consistently crisp, clear, blur-free images. The best overall type of tripod in this application, especially when using a moderate telephoto macro lens on a DSLR or mirrorless, is a sturdy, medium-sized tripod with 3-way pan/tilt head for maximum flexibility.
Another good choice used by many eBay sellers is an adjustable tabletop tripod with a ball head that lets you get the camera and lens as close to your subject as possible. A tabletop tripod is especially useful if you’re shooting with a point-and-shoot camera or a DSLR with a normal lens or short zoom that requires you to get physically close to the subject. Since tabletop tripods are less stable than medium-sized ones, use your camera’s self-timer for a gentle shake-free release. Clamps

Occasionally, it’s necessary to shoot an item from an unusual angle where it can’t be balanced on a flat surface—showing the milled edge of a coin or the full surround of a diamond ring setting, for example. In such cases, it’s sometimes possible to hold the object between your fingers while you take the shot, or use an assistant or set the self-timer, but it’s more convenient to have a clamp that can attach to a tabletop tripod. General Shooting Tips

Set your camera to “A” (aperture-priority) mode and shoot at a small aperture (such as f/16) to maximize depth of field. Shoot large, fine JPEGs at your camera’s maximum resolution setting. Always use a tripod. To start, place floodlights with umbrellas or fluorescent lights with diffusers, aimed at 45-degree angles on both sides of the subject or tent, to obtain even, shadowless lighting. Generally, a ring light aimed directly at the subject will achieve a similar effect, but you may have to vary the subject distance until you get the lighting effect you want.
You can position reflectors on opposite sides of the lights to vary the directionality of the lighting, but flat (even) lighting works best with most subjects, especially highly reflective ones. If you use autofocus (AF) set your camera for spot AF and focus precisely on the subject area requiring critical sharpness. Many experienced online product shooters prefer to use manual focus (MF) for the most consistent, precise results. Review the captured image on your camera’s LCD before changing your setup, and adjust the exposure compensation control (+/-) if needed. You may have to change the aperture, ISO setting, or lighting to get the exact result you want. Remember to get in close and make sure that the item appears as large as possible in the frame so you show maximum detail and don't have to crop the image afterwards.

Post Production

Before uploading your images, check your image-processing software (such as Photoshop). Use the slider controls to adjust the color balance for the most visually accurate color balance, optimize contrast and color saturation. Software such as Lightroom 4 and 5 let you batch-process multiple images to speed up your workflow. Also, check image sharpness. Typically, only moderate sharpening is required—don't overdo it. Having a calibrated monitor helps—check out color calibration tools on the B&H website.
Finally, adjust the size of the images to the eBay standard or the standard of the particular selling site. For example, if the original hi-res image shot on a high-end DSLR is 2336 x 3504 pixels, go into Image Size and change the dimension of the longest side to 1600 pixels (eBay’s standard recommendation) and the short side will automatically adjust to 1067 pixels. Now you are ready to post your image and sell your items with the best chance of success.

Canon has announced a new firmware update – Version 1.2.3 – for the EOS 5D Mark III DSLR, which includes the following improvements and fixes, the details of which are listed below…

Firmware Version 1.2.3 for the EOS 5D Mark III incorporates the following:
  1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the connected Speedlite may not occasionally fire depending on the timing of when the shutter button is pressed.
  2. Fixes a phenomenon in which the AF microadjustment value may accidentally change.
  3. Fixes a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor may show a line of false colour along boundaries of high contrast.
  4. Fixes a phenomenon in which the histogram of a LiveView image is incorrectly displayed when an HDMI cable is connected.
  5. Enables the brightness of the camera’s LCD monitor to be adjusted even when an HDMI cable is connected.

Wow. Nikon has announced a new FX-format DSLR that is sure to catch your eye and might even have you do a double-take. The new Nikon Df DSLR Camera is a still-photo-dedicated camera with the styling and form factor of classic F-series film cameras that contains the sensor of their current flagship D4 DSLR. I say it again, wow. This is a camera sure to appeal to those shooters who appreciate not just the look of older cameras but the simple control of its manual operation system and a thin yet durable and easy-to-grip body. With assets that recognize the advantages in both state-of-the-art digital technology and analog control, the Df sets aside video functions to focus solely on creating gorgeous high-resolution photography. It is available in a black body and a silver body. And Nikon has commemorated this camera announcement by introducing the AF-S 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition lens and therefore created a silver Df DSLR with 50mm f/1.8G kit and a black Df DSLR with 50mm f/1.8G kit.
While the Df has not completely abandoned the possibility of digitally navigating through its intuitive menu, it does emphasize dials and direct control of the most important camera settings. Exposure mode, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, exposure compensation and release mode have their own dedicated metal control dials. The exposure mode dial makes clear the absence of scene modes for only simplified and straightforward P/S/A/M mode shooting.
The geometric hump of its glass pentaprism viewfinder and the dial-heavy top plate immediately signal the classic style elements of this camera, but this is not simply a case of retro form just for the sake of it. In addition to its state-of-the-art digital functions, the Df provides numerous features that have fallen by the wayside on modern DSLRs, but will certainly be appreciated by the strictly still enthusiasts out there. The shutter-release button has a port for a threaded manual shutter-release cable and yet the camera is also compatible with the updated WR Remote System. It also has both a hot-shoe mount compatible with all i-TTL speedlights and a PC sync port for more versatile flash options. And, thanks to a metering coupling lever, the Df features a mount system that works with older non-AI lenses as well as all current AF-S, AF-D, and AF NIKKOR lenses.
The Df’s 16.2MP FX-format image sensor is paired with the EXPEED 3 image processing engine for an optimal balance of resolution, image quality, and shooting speed. Its wide ISO range of 100-12800 is expandable down to 50 and up to 204800 and lets you capture sharp, low-light subjects with crisp edges. DX format crop mode is supported and DX format lenses are compatible when the camera employs the 24 x 16mm DX image area. The Df incorporates the best features of Nikon’s various DSLR models. For example, its 39-point autofocus system with 9 cross-type sensors quickly achieves sharp focus. Nikon’s 3D-tracking focus with a 2,016-pixel RGB sensor is particularly adept at holding focus on a moving subject as it crosses through the frame. A Spot White Balance feature enables you to target specific areas of your composition for a simple color correction. Incorporating JPEG, RAW, and TIFF capture, the Df can continuously shoot up to 5.5 fps in full resolution and its maximum shutter speed is 1/4000 second.
The pentaprism viewfinder provides 0.70x magnification and a 100% angle of view in the FX format. For clear and bright live view image composition and image playback, a 3.2” 921k-dot TFT LCD monitor us supported. It offers a 170-degree viewing angle, a virtual horizon indicator and five adjustable brightness levels. When composing with the LCD in Live View mode, the Df uses fast contrast-detect AF and can display your image at up to 19x magnification for precise focus confirmation.
The Df is the thinnest, lightest full-frame DSLR that Nikon offers and it has a rugged, yet comfortable, build. A magnesium-alloy body with a dimpled rubber coating protects the camera from impact; a well-angled front hand grip and perfectly placed rear thumb grip ensure comfort as well as control during long shoots. The knurled metal dials are easily accessible, while shooting, and rotate smoothly.
With the optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter, it is easy to instantly share photos from the Df with your smartphone or tablet and then out to the waiting world. The Wi-Fi connection also lets you use your smartphone as a remote control for the camera. Nikon’s Scene Recognition System shows off the onboard intelligence of the Df, enabling you to let the camera adjust aperture, white balance, shutter speed, and flash for balanced images.
