Nikon has just introduced a host of updates to their line of COOLPIX point-and-shoot digital cameras, ranging from a new AW120 rugged model to the advanced P340 to the compact, entry-level S32. These six models cover a broad range of photographers' needs.

COOLPIX AW120

One of the most popular lines among the COOLPIX series is their rugged AW series, and the newest entrant to this family is the AW120. Designed to sustain underwater depths to 59', falls from as high as 6.6', and temperatures as cold as 14°F, this camera is well poised to handle harsh and inclement conditions as well as underwater and wintertime adventures. Complementing these durable assets is a unique Action Control scheme, which lends fast and intuitive access to essential camera controls when working underwater or with gloved hands. Furthermore, when coupled with the optional Chest Harness, the AW120 can further exploit its all-weather nature by functioning as an action camera to record full HD movies.

The AW120 features a 5x optical zoom-NIKKOR lens, providing a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-120mm f/2.8-4.9 that is well-suited to use in everyday situations. Hybrid VR image stabilization balances this lens' reach by helping to minimize the effects of camera shake. A 16MP 1/2.3" CMOS sensor offers high-resolution stills and full HD 1080p video recording capabilities, with notable low-light sensitivity to ISO 6400. These imaging traits are further optimized through the implementation of Target Finding AF and Motion Detection to ensure critical focus and proper exposure on moving subjects. Live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation are available via the integrated 3.0" 921k-dot OLED monitor, which features an anti-reflection coating and five-level brightness adjustment.
For sharing photos and videos in a more instantaneous fashion, built-in Wi-Fi enables direct sharing to linked Android and iOS mobile devices for seamless posting to social networking sites. Linked mobile devices can also remotely control the camera and provide a live view image on the device's display. A built-in GPS module accentuates the sharing capabilities, too, by automatically embedding location data in the image's metadata for geo-tagging purposes. An electronic compass and points of interest are also loaded into the camera, making the AW120 an ideal travel companion.
The COOLPIX AW120 Digital Camera is available in black, blue, camouflage, or orange.

COOLPIX P340

Pairing high image quality and full HD 1080p video recording capabilities in a pocket-sized package, the P340 is an advanced compact featuring notable low-light sensitivity and rich rendering abilities, due to its large 12.2MP 1/1.7" CMOS sensor and fast 24-120mm f/1.8-5.6 (35mm equivalent) zoom lens. Beyond the sensor itself and the bright maximum aperture, the low-light abilities are further enhanced by the incorporation of VR image stabilization that helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake.

Program, Shutter-priority, Aperture-priority, and Manual shooting modes permit complete creative control over the imaging process while a host of dedicated scene modes and effects features can be utilized to creatively enhance the look and feel of photos and movies easily. RAW image file recording is possible, too, to enable greater creative freedom during post-processing. Additionally, moving-subject capture is enhanced by a top continuous shooting rate of 10 fps.
Just as with the AW120, the COOLPIX P340 features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity to allow remote camera control and seamless sharing of imagery to linked mobile devices.

COOLPIX P530

In contrast to the compact models, the P530 is a point-and-shoot contextualized by its expansive 42x optical zoom lens and ergonomic form factor. This zoom lens reaches from wide-angle to super telephoto perspectives, 24-1000mm in the 35mm format, and can further be extended through the use of Dynamic Fine Zoom, which effectively doubles the zoom magnification to 84x with minimal image degradation. Optical VR image stabilization complements this lens's capabilities by minimizing camera shake and affording the ability to work with slower shutter speeds or in difficult lighting conditions. A 16.1MP 1/2.3" CMOS Low-Light sensor accentuates these low-light shooting capabilities, with a top sensitivity of ISO 6400, as well as the incorporation of a 0.2" 201k-dot electronic viewfinder, which can serve as a third point of contact between yourself and the camera, for greater stability. A large 3.0" 921k-dot LCD monitor is also incorporated into the camera's design, which is ideal for image review and menu navigation.

Manual shooting modes and different Color Options offer greater control in how the final image appears and the ability to continuously shoot up to 7 fps with Subject Tracking focus makes this camera ideal for working with moving subject matter. In addition to recording high-resolution still images, full HD 1080p video recording is possible, along with stereo sound, and an HDMI port avails direct connection to an HDTV for easy playback. Differing from the aforementioned cameras, the P530 requires the optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter in order to instantly send imagery from the camera to mobile devices.

COOLPIX P600

Maintaining the bridge-style camera shape, the P600 features an even longer 60x optical zoom lens, which covers a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-1440mm,  that is adorned with Super ED glass to reduce optical aberrations and distortions and produce imagery with a high degree of sharpness and clarity. Complementing the inherent traits of this optically refined lens is a 16.1MP 1/2.3" CMOS sensor and Dynamic Fine Zoom technology, which doubles the effective zoom to an exceptional 120x.

An easy-to-hold shape does well to support a lens this long; however, the addition of both a 0.2" 201k-dot eye-level electronic viewfinder and 3.0" 921k-dot Vari-Angle LCD monitor provides even greater handling abilities. The Vari-Angle design of the monitor facilitates easier viewing from both high and low working angles, while the EVF is especially well suited to use in bright conditions, for greater visibility.
Manual shooting modes offer advanced exposure settings control while 20 different Scene Modes promote a more automated method of achieving a well-balanced exposure depending on the scene at hand. A creative Multiple Exposure Mode is available for blending several exposures into a single frame and continuous shooting up to 7 fps is possible to benefit working with fast-moving subjects.
Built-in Wi-Fi permits instant sharing of photos and videos between the camera and mobile device, as well as remote camera control. Additionally, the EN-EL23 rechargeable lithium-ion battery is rated to 330 shots per charge, keeping you shooting all day.
The COOLPIX P600 Digital Camera is available in black or red.

COOLPIX S32

Reverting back to the more pocket-friendly profile, the S32 is a friendly point-and-shoot featuring a durable design that withstands dives down to 33', drops from up to 5', and temperatures as low as 14°F. A high-resolution 13.2MP Low-Light CMOS sensor enables working in difficult lighting conditions and a versatile 3x NIKKOR glass zoom lens, covering a 30-90mm equivalent focal length range, along with Electronic Vibration Reduction, is well suited to working in everyday situations. In addition to still imagery, the S32 is also capable of recording full HD 1080p videos with stereo sound. Live view monitoring and playback can be controlled via the built-in 2.7" 230k-dot LCD monitor.

Designed as a camera for the whole family, the physical profile features oversize buttons to permit a more intuitive sense of orientation when adjusting the camera settings. Image Effects and Scene modes provide a rich catalog of creative effects to apply to imagery while the Smart Portrait System, comprised of Face Priority AF, Skin Softening, and Smile Timer technologies, helps to ensure proper exposure and focus for the most flattering results.
The COOLPIX S32 Digital Camera is available in blue or white.

COOLPIX S9700

Combining elements from both worlds, the S9700 is a compact point-and-shoot featuring an expansive 30x optical zoom NIKKOR lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 25-750mm. Lens-shift type VR image stabilization aids this long reach by countering the effects of camera shake, while Dynamic Fine Zoom is available to double the effective zoom magnification to 60x. A Macro Mode supports working with close-up subject matter and an intelligent Target Finding AF system quickly acquires focus in a consistent and accurate manner.

On the imaging end, a 16MP 1/2.3" CMOS sensor offers notable low-light sensitivity to ISO 6400 and also avails a continuous shooting rate of 6.9 fps. Manual shooting mode allow more direct control over the exposure settings and Quick Effects can be employed to further creatively enhance imagery. In addition to high-resolution still imaging capabilities, full HD 1080p movies can also be recorded, with stereo sound, and played back directly to an HDTV via the HDMI port.
Beyond built-in Wi-Fi featured in many of these new cameras, the S9700 also adds built-in GPS to automatically embed location data into your files for intuitive plotting to interactive maps. This GPS module also lends itself to providing an electronic compass and a series of points of interest to aid the traveling photographer visiting unfamiliar destinations.

As the successor to the popular and distinctive WG-3 “tough” camera, the new Ricoh WG-4 Digital Camera takes things up a notch with a new image processing engine, updated shooting modes, and enhanced waterproof construction. In addition, two of the four new models come equipped with a sophisticated GPS module. The standard WG-4 is available in lime yellow or silver, while the WG-4 GPS is available in black or blue. For expanded functionality and stable camera placement, Ricoh has also released a series of mounting accessories for use with the WG-4. These mounts will attach your camera to windows, handlebars, helmets, or numerous other items and surfaces with strength and aplomb. Finally, Ricoh has also announced a new 1.4x teleconverter for K-mount DSLRs and lenses.

The WG-4 houses a 16MP 1/2.3” Backlit CMOS sensor that captures sharp, high-resolution images with accurate colors and a rich tonal range. The sensor also enables a fast 9-point contrast-detect autofocus system and low-light sensitivity with ISO up to 6400. The new-generation imaging engine brings with it faster response times, including fast shutter lag time and a burst mode continuous shooting rate of up to 14 fps.
Tough cameras are so called because they offer a set of features that allows them to be used in harsh climates, underwater, and to withstand serious impact. They are perfect for the adventurous among us, but just as ideal for those of us who want to take our cameras to the ski slopes and the pool and not worry about damage from the commonplace effects of gravity. Frankly, tough cameras are great for anyone with kids or for those who like to carry a quality camera everywhere and not be too concerned about its welfare. The WG-4 is waterproof to a depth of 45’, shockproof to falls of up to 6.5’, crushproof to 220 lbf, and resistant to temperatures as low as 14°F. It is also designed to be dustproof, which enables fearless trips to the beach, the baseball diamond, or on a trail-bike ride.
The lens on the WG-4 is a 4x optical zoom lens with the 35mm equivalent focal length of 25-100mm, providing wide-angle inclusiveness and telephoto reach. Furthermore, its maximum aperture at the wide-angle end is f/2, which makes it effective in low light and allows fine control of depth of field for beautiful portraits and still life. A triple shake-reduction system combines an image-sensor-shift mechanism with digital Pixel Track and high ISO SR modes to reduce the effects of camera shake and create images with minimal blur, even images shot while moving and in low light. Six LED Macro Lights encircle the lens, providing brighter and balanced lighting when shooting detailed close-ups in Macro Mode.
New on the WG-4, and enabling improved imaging control, is a Shutter Priority mode to help freeze fast-moving action or to creatively add a blur of speed or playful light trails to your shot. Also, a new User mode brings the total number of shooting modes on the WG-4 to 29, some of which provide automatic camera control over difficult shots, while others allow for creative imaging such as time-lapse movies and digital microscope perspective. Two distinct Underwater shooting modes are also supported. And Full HD 1080p video is featured at 30 fps along with HD 720p video with 60 fps or slow-motion 120 fps options.
Image playback and composition is provided by the 3.0” TFT color LCD monitor, with its 460k-dot resolution and 170° wide-angle viewing capability. An anti-reflective coating enables bright and clear visibility even in bright sunlight. The WG-4 has a built-in flash in addition to its LCD light ring, and can throw additional light as far as 34’ when needed. 70MB of internal memory is a saving grace if necessary and SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards are otherwise compatible. With its distinctive and ergonomic form factor, bright coloring, reinforced polycarbonate build with aluminum accents and included carabiner strap, the WG is a most recognizable camera.
As mentioned above, the lime yellow and silver models come equipped with GPS functionality, which automatically records location data onto your images and offers an integrated digital compass, as well as pressure, altitude, and depth gauges for serious trekkers and divers.

Mount Accessories

To better use your WG-4 on an adventure or when taking group shots or selfies at home, Ricoh has introduced a line of mounting accessories designed to fit the WG camera series. The O-CH1470 WG Holder is the basic element that cradles the camera and, using its versatile ball-and-socket system, can fit into any one of the three available mounts. A thumb screw that fits the the camera’s tripod thread secures the camera, and a rubber latch provides additional and flexible support when mounted on a moving object. The ball-and-socket system allows you to place the camera in any shooting position and enables quick release and transfer to the other mounts.

The O-CM1472 WG Handle Bar Mount uses thumb screws and a pinch-type design to fasten itself to the handlebars of bikes, motorcycles, or hang gliders for extreme action capture. Using a powerful adhesive tape, the O-CM1471 WG Flat Adhesive Mount is a simple solution for semi-permanent mounting of the WG series cameras to any flat or slightly curved surface such as helmets, walls, or tabletops. Lastly, the O-CM1473 WG Suction Cup Mount is ideal for repeated use when mounting your camera on windows, boats, cars, or even surfboards and helmets. The suction cup provides a quick-release lever for rapid removal. The WG Holder and all mounts are available separately and compatible with all WG-series cameras.

Teleconverter for K-Mount Lenses

Ricoh has also announced the release of a new teleconverter for K-mount telephoto lenses. The 1.4x HD DA AF Rear Converter AW for K-Mount Lenses provides 1.4x magnification, increasing the focal length of a K-mount lens by 40%, while retaining the minimum focus distance of the lens. It mounts on the rear of the lens and then on the camera body, and enables autofocus and auto-exposure capability with both camera-driven and lens-driven AF systems. Compatible camera bodies are the K-3, K-50, K-500, K-30, K-5 II, K-5 II s, K-5, K-01, K-7, and K-r; the camera’s firmware must be updated to the latest version for full autofocus compatibility.

The converter’s 4 optical elements are coated with exclusive multi-layer HD lens coating, which improves light transmittance and reduces reflection, which produces sharper images with minimal ghosting and flare. It provides weather-resistant construction to match that of the K-mount DSLR cameras and is a durable, compact, lightweight accessory that allows you to get extended focal-length reach from your telephoto lenses.

One of the very best advanced compact cameras, the Canon PowerShot G1 X, is now being updated by the PowerShot G1 X Mark II and is bringing with it substantial improvements and additions, including the DIGIC 6 Image Processor, an f/2 maximum aperture lens, tilting touchscreen LCD, and Wi-Fi connectivity. The Mark II decreases the pixel count in its sensor, compared to the G1 X, but still features the relatively large 1.5” High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor with effective 12.8MP. Combine this sensor with the DIGIC 6 processor and you experience effective low-light performance and greatly improved focus speeds. The processor also enables the elimination of buffer time for continuous full-resolution shooting speeds of 5.2 fps up to the capacity of the memory card when using SDHC/SDXC UHS-I cards. The G1 X offered a rate of 4.5 fps up to only 6 frames.

The lens on the Mark II improves both its focal-length range and maximum aperture size. It offers a 5x optical zoom with the equivalent focal length of 24-120mm, which expands on both the wide-angle and telephoto ends of the range. Also, the maximum aperture on the wide-angle end is f/2, improving the low-light capture over the G1 X and enabling shallow depth-of-field control. A 9-blade aperture provides soft out-of-focus areas and newly developed Dual Control Rings enable customized functions with operations similar to an SLR lens, including full-time manual focus. Optical Image Stabilization further helps by compensating for camera shake and creating low-light images with less blur.
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows instant transfer of images to smartphones and tablets as well as Wi-Fi-enabled computers and even directly to social media sites. A Wi-Fi connection and the free Canon CameraWindow app also enable using your smart device as a remote control for the camera; with Near Field Communication, establishing a wireless connection to an Android device is simple.

Snow is still on the ground here in the Northeast, but apparently it’s spring cleaning time at Canon. From entry-level to “tough” cameras to advanced point-and-shoots and even the great Rebel entry-level DSLR series, Canon is sweeping the table clean and upgrading many of their most popular cameras for 2014. They’ve even announced a new Macro Ring Flash for close-up photography with EF lenses.

EOS Rebel T5 DSLR

Let’s start with the now venerable Canon Rebel series of DSLRs. The EOS Rebel T5 DSLR with EF-S 18-55mm IS II lens is an update of the Rebel T3 and brings with it an 18MP CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 4 Image processor. As an APS-C format camera, compatible with Canon EF and EF-S lenses, it is an ideal compact DSLR for those beginning to take their photography seriously or those wanting the imaging power and versatility of a DSLR but in a more compact form. Incredibly, the Rebel T5 body weighs less than one pound and its small but ergonomic design features a large hand grip that makes it easy to carry and shoot.

Loaded with assistive features such as Scene Intelligent Auto, you can let the camera do the work and still expect optimal results. Furthermore, “Feature Guide,” an in-camera learning tool, offers short descriptions of shooting modes, settings and creative effects to help you understand your camera and its capabilities. For those looking to expand their skill set is Creative Auto mode, in which basic settings are on full automatic operation, but shooting guides on the LCD screen explain how to make changes to exposure, tone, sharpness, and more.
While its 63-zone, dual-layer metering system and comprehensive auto functions make it easy to capture balanced exposures, the T5  is still a full-fledged DSLR with manual exposure modes and RAW capture, including RAW + JPEG. It has a top plate dial and menu controls and provides a hot-shoe mount for attaching photo and video accessories and also supports a built-in flash for simplified yet powerful flash photography.
Low light sensitivity is impressive, with an ISO range that expands to 12800. The 9-point autofocus system, which includes one center cross-type AF point and AI Servo AF, is fast and accurate. A continuous shooting rate of 3 fps for up to 69 JPEG shots will help you capture fast-moving action and the Quick Control button enables fast adjustments. The Rebel series is known for its HD video capability and the T5 is no different. It supports full HD 1080p capture at 30 or 24 frames per second and, in HD 720p, it offers a 60 fps rate. A 3.0” TFT color LCD monitor with 460k-dot resolution enables live-view composition and playback and an optical viewfinder provides standard eye-level composition with exposure information displayed in the finder.
An important advantage of a Rebel DSLR over a mirrorless or point-and-shoot camera is its native compatibility with the full line of Canon EF and EF-S lenses. To get you started, this new T5 comes bundled with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II lens, which is a versatile and compact zoom lens with the 35mm/full-frame equivalence of 29-88mm for wide-angle through short telephoto perspectives. The lens is designed for the Rebel’s APS-C sensor and with one aspherical lens element, chromatic aberrations are reduced, and sharp, color-accurate images are the result. The optical image stabilization system provides up to four stops of compensation against camera shake to minimize blur when shooting in dim light.

It seems that it’s the time of the season for multi-camera announcements from big camera manufacturers, and Sony is leading the way, offering a new advanced mirrorless APS-C camera and a new 70-200mm f/4 full-frame E-mount lens. They have also announced five new digital cameras set to succeed already popular compacts. The point-and-shoots, from entry-level variety to advanced long zoom models, represent the latest generation of the Cyber-shot family.

Sony Alpha A6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera

With the Sony Alpha A6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera, which is available as a body only or as a kit with a 16-50mm lens, Sony continues to update their mirrorless lineup. This current model will succeed the NEX-6, taking its place just behind the NEX-7, as one of their premiere APS-C format mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras. The A6000 features a 24.3MP Exmor APS-HD CMOS sensor and, with the BIONZ X image processor and 179 autofocus points and up to 11 fps burst shooting, it provides particularly fast performance and does so in a compact form factor that can easily be carried with you throughout the day.

The sensor features Sony’s gapless on-chip design, which optimizes the position of the on-chip lenses to increase light-gathering efficiency for better image quality from edge to edge. High sensitivity ISO ranging from 100-25600 enables low-light imaging with minimized noise. The BIONZ X Image Processor, which is the same processor as in the full-frame A7 and A7R cameras, sharpens details, improves area-specific noise reduction, and ramps up performance speed including the Fast Hybrid autofocus, which utilizes 25 Contrast detection AF points and 179 Phase-detection AF points. Autofocus can be achieved in as little as 0.06 seconds, and with numerous modes and AF features such as Eye-AF and AF Area Settings, exacting control over focus will enable faster and more precise focus.
Don’t let the compact size of the A6000 fool you—it offers the interface and control features similar to a DSLR. Dial controls, an Fn button and customizable buttons make adjustments fast and a multi-interface shoe enables the use of numerous accessories. A pop-up flash is also supported and a 3.0” 921k-dot tiltable LCD monitor provides clear playback and odd-angle composition. Grid display, histogram, and focus peaking are supported. The bright OLED 1.4M-dot Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder uses four double-sided aspherical lenses for enhanced high-contrast viewing. All camera adjustments, including creative Picture Effects, can be seen within the EVF and brightness and color temperature adjustment as well as focus enlargement aid in accurate composition.
Integrated Wi-Fi connectivity enables instant sharing of photos with smartphones, tablets, and even compatible TVs and NFC (Near Field Communication) makes linking with Android devices easy. The free Sony PlayMemories app adds functions such as remote camera control and direct upload to social media sites.
Full HD 1080p is supported in the AVCHD format with 60 and 24 fps rates and stereo audio. The improved autofocus functions let you set the AF drive speed when shooting video as well as providing AF tracking duration settings. The enhanced phase-detection light gathering also adds to the camera’s scene-recognition capability—it is the first E-mount camera to offer Automatic AF mode.
All E-mount lenses are compatible with the A6000 and Sony has created a kit that bundles a 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS lens with the new A6000. This E-mount lens provides the 35mm focal length equivalence of 24-75mm for wide-angle to short telephoto versatility. Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization results in clear, blur-free photos and videos and a stepping motor and power zoom feature provide smooth and quiet AF action, which is especially helpful when shooting video. A dual-function control ring enables both manual focus and zoom action. One ED lens element and four aspherical elements minimize aberrations and contribute to sharp, high-contrast imaging. When powered down, the retracting mechanism on the lens reduces its length to just 1.2”, for truly compact transport.

Unveiled: New Sony Cyber-shots!

Cyber-shot HX400, Cyber-shot H400, and Cyber-shot H300

These three Cyber-shot cameras are very similar in terms of form factor, each offering high zoom capability with a large “bridge camera” style grip, but dig a little deeper and their individual qualities become apparent.
The Cyber-shot DSC-HX400 Digital Camera is the upgraded follow-up to the Cyber-shot DSC-HX300 and shares with it a 20.4MP 1/2.3” Exmor R CMOS sensor and the impressive Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T* 50x optical zoom lens. What it adds is the powerful BIONZ X Image Processor for faster performance, more advanced auto modes and enhanced full HD 1080p video capture. It also now features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC for instant image transfer from camera to smart device as well as one-touch sharing and remote control.
The 50x zoom lens provides the 35mm focal length equivalent of 24-1200mm for versatile shooting with a powerful telephoto reach. At the wide-angle end, the 24mm equivalence enables inclusive group shots in cramped interiors as well as broad landscape vistas. This one lens will cover almost any shooting situation up to ultra telephoto magnification of distant subjects. Its maximum aperture on the wide end is f/2.8, which is effective in low light and offers shallow depth-of-field focus control for sharp portraiture with smooth out-of-focus backgrounds. Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization compensates for camera shake to minimize blur when shooting in low light or at telephoto focal lengths, and Intelligent Active Mode provides shake control when shooting HD video.
The video mode on the HX400 shoots full HD 1080p/i at 60 as well as at 24 fps along with having a built-in stereo microphone with wind-filter function that enables clear sound recording. Lower-resolution video is also supported for directly uploading to the Internet, and HDMI output makes it easy to directly play back your recordings on an HDTV.
A 3.0” tilt LCD with 921k-dot resolution provides image playback and bright composition viewing. An optical eye-level viewfinder with 8.1x and 16.2x magnification is also available for composition. For additional illumination, a built-in, manual pop-up flash unit with numerous flash modes and auto mode coverage of up to 28’ is supported. Advanced features such as Intelligent Auto, Face Detection, and Intelligent Sweep Panorama let you focus on composition while the camera adjusts important settings.
The Cyber-shot DSC-H400 Digital Camera houses a 20.1MP 1/2.3” Super HAD CCD sensor and the BIONZ image sensor. It has a 63x optical zoom lens that provides the 35mm equivalent of a 24.5-1550mm lens. This is an incredibly long Sony zoom lens with an f/3.4-6.5 maximum aperture. It can focus as close as 0.4” at the wide-angle end for extreme close-up photography. ISO runs from 80-3200 for a broad sensitivity range, rich colors in bright light, and effective low-light capability. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization with Intelligent Active Mode compensates against blur in both still and video capture. This is an important feature with such a long zoom lens.
Video is recorded at 720p at 30 fps with a built-in mono microphone. The LCD monitor is 3.0” with 460k-dot resolution. It also features a 0.2” electronic viewfinder with 201k-dot resolution for stable and bright eye-level composition. Intelligent Auto, 8-face Face Detection and Smile Shutter technology allow the camera to do the heavy lifting in certain situations. A built-in pop-up flash is supported for extra light when needed. Like the HX400, the H400 supports SD, SDHC, SDXC, and MS Pro Duo and Pro-HG Duo memory cards. The H400 is slightly lighter than the HX400.
Lighter than the H400 but with similar specs is the Cyber-shot DSC-H300 Digital Camera. It is the successor to the DSC-H200 and, like the other two cameras, has a bridge-style form factor and a long zoom lens. Its Sony lens does not reach the lengths of the H400 but is still an impressive 35x optical zoom with a 35mm equivalence of 25-875mm for covering everything from wide-angle through standard and portrait length to ultra-telephoto. The maximum aperture at the wide-angle end is f/3.0, slightly more effective in low light than the H400, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization will control the blur that often accompanies long zoom shooting.
Like the H400, the H300 houses a 20.1MP 1/2.3” Super HAD CCD sensor and the BIONZ image sensor and features HD 720p video capture at 30 fps in the MP4 format. Intelligent Active Mode minimizes blur and shake during video recording. The 3.0” Clear Photo LCD with 460k-dot resolution provides composition and playback viewing, including brightness control, histogram, and grid display. Several assistive features such as Intelligent Auto, Blink Detection, Smile Shutter, Face Detection, and Tracking Focus enable you to simply get the shots you want, letting the camera set exposure and even help with composition and timing.

Cyber-shot WX350

The Cyber-shot DSC-WX350 Digital Camera is particularly compact yet has a powerful 18.2MP 1/2.3” Exmor R CMOS sensor. At just 4.8 oz and 1.0” deep, it is a classic pocket camera, but comes loaded with impressive features, including the above-mentioned sensor and the latest BIONZ X image processor. It is available in black or white. Its 20x optical zoom Sony G lens provides a comprehensive wide-angle through telephoto set of focal lengths, equivalent to 25-500mm in the 35mm format. Its optical design includes five aspherical elements, which minimize aberrations and contribute to well delineated and true-color images. The lens fully retracts into the camera body when powered down. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization is featured to reduce the blur created by slower shutter speeds when shooting in dim light and at longer telephoto lengths.

The WX350 updates the Cyber-shot WX300; its sensor and new processor combination enable accelerated performance speeds, and autofocus is fast and accurate, including Tracking Focus and Face Tracking Focus modes. The burst rate is 10 fps at maximum resolution, up to 10 shots. Also, low-light sensitivity is impressive for a compact camera with ISO ranging from 80 to 12800. Full HD 1080p/i video is recorded in AVCHD Version2 at 60 fps and MP4 capture is also supported at 30 fps for files that can be uploaded directly to the Internet. Panasonic has announced a new addition to the company’s Lumix GH series, the Lumix DMC-GH4, a hybrid  DSLM camera that adds substantial features to an already competent platform. Although still photography has not taken a back seat to the video functionality, it is in the latter area that the majority of the advancements have been made, primarily in the ability to capture footage in 4K resolution. Available to anyone, but positioned for the advanced amateur, indie, and professional photographer and filmmaker, the camera’s 17.02 megapixel (16.05 effective) Live MOS Micro Four Thirds sensor is supported by the Venus Engine image processor running on a quad-core CPU. This combination delivers approximately 50% higher speed signal readout, which aids in suppressing rolling shutter artifacts when using the electronic shutter or recording video. And for professional photo performance, moiré suppression has been improved, along with superior noise reduction that allows for exposures of up to sixty minutes.

The camera features the same durable magnesium-alloy body used by its predecessor, and when combined with suitable lenses, delivers a splash- and dust-proof package. The high-performance shutter is rated for 200,000 release times with a maximum speed of 1/8000 of a second. A silent mode switches the shutter from mechanical to electronic operation, turns off any sounds, and suppresses the AF assist lamp and flash for situations where working in a discreet manner is required. Contrast Auto Focus with 49-area focusing enables the camera to lock on to a subject in approximately 0.07 seconds when paired with certain Panasonic lenses. Burst speeds in AFS mode have been boosted to 12 fps using the mechanical shutter, and up to 40 fps with the electronic shutter. Sensitivity has also been improved with a maximum ISO 25600, along with gradation performance, resolution, and color reproduction. Images can be captured in RAW or JPEG or a combination of both, and various photo styles can be added, with multiple parameters in each mode that can be adjusted or set into the camera’s memory.
Video recording is available in Cinema 4K (4096 x 2160, 24 fps) and QFHD 4K (3840 x 216, up to 30 fps) in MOV/MP4 formats. Full HD video can be captured with 200Mbps ALL-Intra or 100Mbps IPB, with no limit on recording time, and users can choose from MOV, MP4, AVCHD Progressive, and AVCHD formats at a variety of frame rates, according to their needs. In MP4/MOV, sound is recorded as LPCM (Linear Pulse Code Modulation) audio files. Real-time 4:2:2/8-bit output to an external monitor is available using an optional micro HDMI cable. In this instance, video is simultaneously recorded in 4:2:0/8-bit to the internal cards. 4:2:2/10-bit output is also available but simultaneous recording is not possible in this scenario. Users can choose to output only the recorded content or the content with the setting menus displayed. Variable Frame Rates (VFR) enable Full HD to be recorded with slow or fast motion (up to 96 fps) and time lapse/stop-motion animation can also be achieved without resorting to post production.
A slew of features for professional video production are available. SMPTE compliant Timecode in “Rec Run” or “Free Run” makes it easy to synchronize multiple videos or sound sources in post production. Color Bars (SMPTE/EBU/ARIB Standard) are used for fixing color or brightness to broadcast specifications and a 1kHz Test Tone can be used for setting appropriate audio levels. Synchro Scan helps suppress flicker over the TV or PC monitor, or when shooting under fluorescent lights, and a Center Marker works as a guide mark for image composition. “CINELIKE D” and “CINELIKE V” gamma settings create a cinema-like tone for expanded creativity, and use of the Master Pedestal allows for adjusting the brightness balance +/-15 steps based on the color black. A Zebra Pattern function displays overexposed areas before or during shooting with the pattern available for output to an external monitor. Focus Peaking displays accurate focus in MF and AF+MF modes. Users can monitor the focus peak in live view or via remote photo/ video shooting with a smartphone or a tablet using Wi-Fi.
And speaking of Wi-Fi, the GH4 integrates IEEE 802.11 b/g/n connectivity with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to offer more operational options, as well as instant image sharing. With the company’s iOS and Android "Image App," remote shooting of both photo and video is possible using a smartphone or tablet as the remote shutter and monitor. In addition to releasing the shutter, control over zooming, focusing, and settings of shutter speed, aperture, and exposure compensation is available. It is also easy to embed geotags into the image after shooting. For the smartphone or tablet without NFC, the camera displays a dedicated QR code on its monitor for easy pairing.
In addition to the standard luminance level of 16-235 and 16-255, the camera offers the full luminance range of 0-255 for the photographer who is new to video. The Live View function is also advanced, making it possible to adjust highlight and shadow separately, using the front and rear dial. Three pattern settings can be customized in addition to the three preset patterns. Aside from the conventional Face Recognition Auto Focus (AF), newly incorporated Eye Detection AF automatically sets focus on the eye of a human face. Custom Multi AF mode allows users to freely select the blocks for focusing out of the total 49 points. 1-area AF area can be seamlessly magnified not only in manual but also in autofocus modes. Tracking AF has also been advanced in tracking accuracy by estimating the subject’s movement. The focus point can be set on any part of the 100% field of view and can be magnified either with a manual focus ring or with the cursor key in MF Assist mode. In the Touch Pad AF, the position can be set either on an absolute or relative coordinate.
The GH4 features newly developed high-precision, high-speed dual Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) displays for the Live View Finder (LVF) and the rear monitor. Increasing the resolution of the display area to 2,359K dots, the 16:9 wide screen electronic viewfinder has approximately 1.34x/0.67x (35mm camera equivalent) magnification, 100% field of view, and an eye point of approximately 21mm. Notably, the OLED for the LVF boasts 10,000:1 high contrast for superior color reproduction. And with a newly designed large eyecup, the visibility of the LVF is dramatically improved. Image output is automatically switched between the LVF and the rear monitor with high, low, and off sensitivity options to reduce false switching. The 3.0-inch 1,036K-dot free-angle OLED rear monitor can be rotated 180° to the side and tilted 270° up and down and offers an approximately 100% field of view. It features static touch control for smooth operation, either while shooting or during playback. Both the LVF and rear monitor have a high-speed response with minimum time lag, while enhancing the resolution.
Three dials are available on the top and back of the camera and the main dial now comes with a lock. A dedicated button allows direct access to exposure compensation, white balance adjustment, or ISO setting, and a maximum of five settings can be assigned to the “Fn” button. All these external components are designed to be operated easily without taking one's eye away from the viewfinder. A variety of terminals provides flexible shooting options. A 3.5mm microphone jack is available for audio recording using an external microphone, and the 3.5mm headphone jack provides monitoring of the incoming audio while shooting video. In addition to these, the camera has AV outputs (two-channel audio, composite), a flash sync terminal, and 2.5mm jack for a remote controller. The built-in and an external flash can be synchronized with a maximum 1/250-second shutter speed.
While on the subject of connectivity, the company has developed the DMW-YAGH interface unit that places the camera squarely in a professional production environment. 3G-SDI video terminals that are compliant with full HD (4:2:2/10-bit) offer four parallel outputs that can also be used for 4K (4:2:2/10-bit) output, both with Timecode. Dual XLR input terminals can accept either line or microphone levels, with individually switchable 48V phantom power available for use with condenser microphones. Volume levels can be controlled separately for each channel, with the audio levels displayed via LED meters on the rear of the unit. The 12V DC input is compliant with large-capacity industrial batteries for continuously supplying the GH4 with power.
A total of twenty-two interchangeable LUMIX G digital lenses offers a multitude of creative options, including HD lenses that allow for silent, high performance AF control suitable for video recording. Various expansion options are available including an external flash, shotgun microphones, a battery grip, and more. Of course, as with all Micro Four Thirds cameras, almost the entire world of manual lenses is available for use on the GH4 with a suitable optional adapter. And last, but not least, for the global business of professional users, the system frequency can be selected between 59.94 (23.98), 50.00, or 24.00Hz.
The camera will be available as a GH4 body only, or as a kit with the DMW-YAGH unit, in addition to purchasing the DMW-YAGH expansion unit separately.
