One of the very best advanced compact cameras, the Canon PowerShot G1 X, is now being updated by the PowerShot G1 X Mark II and is bringing with it substantial improvements and additions, including the DIGIC 6 Image Processor, an f/2 maximum aperture lens, tilting touchscreen LCD, and Wi-Fi connectivity. The Mark II decreases the pixel count in its sensor, compared to the G1 X, but still features the relatively large 1.5” High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor with effective 12.8MP. Combine this sensor with the DIGIC 6 processor and you experience effective low-light performance and greatly improved focus speeds. The processor also enables the elimination of buffer time for continuous full-resolution shooting speeds of 5.2 fps up to the capacity of the memory card when using SDHC/SDXC UHS-I cards. The G1 X offered a rate of 4.5 fps up to only 6 frames.

The lens on the Mark II improves both its focal-length range and maximum aperture size. It offers a 5x optical zoom with the equivalent focal length of 24-120mm, which expands on both the wide-angle and telephoto ends of the range. Also, the maximum aperture on the wide-angle end is f/2, improving the low-light capture over the G1 X and enabling shallow depth-of-field control. A 9-blade aperture provides soft out-of-focus areas and newly developed Dual Control Rings enable customized functions with operations similar to an SLR lens, including full-time manual focus. Optical Image Stabilization further helps by compensating for camera shake and creating low-light images with less blur.
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows instant transfer of images to smartphones and tablets as well as Wi-Fi-enabled computers and even directly to social media sites. A Wi-Fi connection and the free Canon CameraWindow app also enable using your smart device as a remote control for the camera; with Near Field Communication, establishing a wireless connection to an Android device is simple.
Full HD 1080p video capture is supported with a dedicated movie button for immediate switchover to video mode, and the bright 3.0” LCD monitor provides playback and composition viewing. The LCD on the G1 X Mark II differs from that of the G1 X in that it does not fold out and swivel, but instead tilts up 180° and down 45° for odd-angle shooting. It features a 1.04M-dot capacitive touchscreen for easy touch-control navigation, as well as shutter release and touch-focus capability. Also, the G1 X Mark II eliminates the optical viewfinder in favor of an optional electronic viewfinder. The EVF-DC1 is easily attached to the camera’s hot-shoe mount and has a precise XGA resolution LCD with 2.36 million dots and displays the exact information found on the camera’s LCD. The camera can switch automatically between the LCD and the EVF and the EVF features dioptric adjustment and 90° tilt capability.
The G-series, renowned for their advanced compact camera functionality, support full manual exposure control as well as auto modes and assistive functions. The Mark II moves forward adding 14-bit RAW + JPEG capability for professional-level creative control as well as Star Shooting mode for simplified shooting of the night sky.
