By Bjorn Petersen Nikon has just introduced a host of updates to their line of COOLPIX point-and-shoot digital cameras, ranging from a new AW120 rugged model to the advanced P340 to the compact, entry-level S32. These six models cover a broad range of photographers' needs.
COOLPIX AW120
One of the most popular lines among the COOLPIX series is their rugged AW series, and the newest entrant to this family is the AW120. Designed to sustain underwater depths to 59', falls from as high as 6.6', and temperatures as cold as 14°F, this camera is well poised to handle harsh and inclement conditions as well as underwater and wintertime adventures. Complementing these durable assets is a unique Action Control scheme, which lends fast and intuitive access to essential camera controls when working underwater or with gloved hands. Furthermore, when coupled with the optional Chest Harness, the AW120 can further exploit its all-weather nature by functioning as an action camera to record full HD movies. The AW120 features a 5x optical zoom-NIKKOR lens, providing a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-120mm f/2.8-4.9 that is well-suited to use in everyday situations. Hybrid VR image stabilization balances this lens' reach by helping to minimize the effects of camera shake. A 16MP 1/2.3" CMOS sensor offers high-resolution stills and full HD 1080p video recording capabilities, with notable low-light sensitivity to ISO 6400. These imaging traits are further optimized through the implementation of Target Finding AF and Motion Detection to ensure critical focus and proper exposure on moving subjects. Live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation are available via the integrated 3.0" 921k-dot OLED monitor, which features an anti-reflection coating and five-level brightness adjustment.
For sharing photos and videos in a more instantaneous fashion, built-in Wi-Fi enables direct sharing to linked Android and iOS mobile devices for seamless posting to social networking sites. Linked mobile devices can also remotely control the camera and provide a live view image on the device's display. A built-in GPS module accentuates the sharing capabilities, too, by automatically embedding location data in the image's metadata for geo-tagging purposes. An electronic compass and points of interest are also loaded into the camera, making the AW120 an ideal travel companion.
The COOLPIX AW120 Digital Camera is available in black, blue, camouflage, or orange.
COOLPIX P340
Pairing high image quality and full HD 1080p video recording capabilities in a pocket-sized package, the P340 is an advanced compact featuring notable low-light sensitivity and rich rendering abilities, due to its large 12.2MP 1/1.7" CMOS sensor and fast 24-120mm f/1.8-5.6 (35mm equivalent) zoom lens. Beyond the sensor itself and the bright maximum aperture, the low-light abilities are further enhanced by the incorporation of VR image stabilization that helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake.Just as with the AW120, the COOLPIX P340 features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity to allow remote camera control and seamless sharing of imagery to linked mobile devices.
COOLPIX P530
In contrast to the compact models, the P530 is a point-and-shoot contextualized by its expansive 42x optical zoom lens and ergonomic form factor. This zoom lens reaches from wide-angle to super telephoto perspectives, 24-1000mm in the 35mm format, and can further be extended through the use of Dynamic Fine Zoom, which effectively doubles the zoom magnification to 84x with minimal image degradation. Optical VR image stabilization complements this lens's capabilities by minimizing camera shake and affording the ability to work with slower shutter speeds or in difficult lighting conditions. A 16.1MP 1/2.3" CMOS Low-Light sensor accentuates these low-light shooting capabilities, with a top sensitivity of ISO 6400, as well as the incorporation of a 0.2" 201k-dot electronic viewfinder, which can serve as a third point of contact between yourself and the camera, for greater stability. A large 3.0" 921k-dot LCD monitor is also incorporated into the camera's design, which is ideal for image review and menu navigation.Manual shooting modes and different Color Options offer greater control in how the final image appears and the ability to continuously shoot up to 7 fps with Subject Tracking focus makes this camera ideal for working with moving subject matter. In addition to recording high-resolution still images, full HD 1080p video recording is possible, along with stereo sound, and an HDMI port avails direct connection to an HDTV for easy playback. Differing from the aforementioned cameras, the P530 requires the optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter in order to instantly send imagery from the camera to mobile devices.
COOLPIX P600
Maintaining the bridge-style camera shape, the P600 features an even longer 60x optical zoom lens, which covers a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-1440mm, that is adorned with Super ED glass to reduce optical aberrations and distortions and produce imagery with a high degree of sharpness and clarity. Complementing the inherent traits of this optically refined lens is a 16.1MP 1/2.3" CMOS sensor and Dynamic Fine Zoom technology, which doubles the effective zoom to an exceptional 120x.An easy-to-hold shape does well to support a lens this long; however, the addition of both a 0.2" 201k-dot eye-level electronic viewfinder and 3.0" 921k-dot Vari-Angle LCD monitor provides even greater handling abilities. The Vari-Angle design of the monitor facilitates easier viewing from both high and low working angles, while the EVF is especially well suited to use in bright conditions, for greater visibility.
Manual shooting modes offer advanced exposure settings control while 20 different Scene Modes promote a more automated method of achieving a well-balanced exposure depending on the scene at hand. A creative Multiple Exposure Mode is available for blending several exposures into a single frame and continuous shooting up to 7 fps is possible to benefit working with fast-moving subjects.
Built-in Wi-Fi permits instant sharing of photos and videos between the camera and mobile device, as well as remote camera control. Additionally, the EN-EL23 rechargeable lithium-ion battery is rated to 330 shots per charge, keeping you shooting all day.
COOLPIX S32
Reverting back to the more pocket-friendly profile, the S32 is a friendly point-and-shoot featuring a durable design that withstands dives down to 33', drops from up to 5', and temperatures as low as 14°F. A high-resolution 13.2MP Low-Light CMOS sensor enables working in difficult lighting conditions and a versatile 3x NIKKOR glass zoom lens, covering a 30-90mm equivalent focal length range, along with Electronic Vibration Reduction, is well suited to working in everyday situations. In addition to still imagery, the S32 is also capable of recording full HD 1080p videos with stereo sound. Live view monitoring and playback can be controlled via the built-in 2.7" 230k-dot LCD monitor.Designed as a camera for the whole family, the physical profile features oversize buttons to permit a more intuitive sense of orientation when adjusting the camera settings. Image Effects and Scene modes provide a rich catalog of creative effects to apply to imagery while the Smart Portrait System, comprised of Face Priority AF, Skin Softening, and Smile Timer technologies, helps to ensure proper exposure and focus for the most flattering results.
